Silas H. Abrego, emeritus vice president for student affairs, will be honored with two awards — a Hispanic Education Endowment Fund (HEEF) Apple of Gold and a Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) lifetime achievement award. Both awards are in recognition of Abrego’s commitment to academic success for Latino students.

The HEEF award will be presented Oct. 12 at the Anaheim Hilton, and the HACU award will be presented Oct. 22 at the organization’s 26th annual conference in Washington, D.C.

Besides Abrego, HEEF also will be recognizing Cal State Fullerton alumna Cynthia Vasquez Petitt with an Apple of Gold Award for “Excellence in K-12 Leadership.” Vasquez Petitt is an administrator in the Anaheim Union High School District. She received a master’s degree in education from Cal State Fullerton in 2005.
