Musical ‘Carousel’ Opening Friday in Little Theatre
Nov. 27, 2012
Rodgers and Hammerstein's hit musical "Carousel" opens Nov. 30 in the Little Theatre of the Clayes Performing Arts Center and continues through Dec. 16.
Directed by Eve Himmelheber, associate professor of theatre and dance, the musical is a story of love, loss and redemption set in a New England fishing village at the end of the 19th century.
Swaggering, bad-boy carnival worker Billy Bigelow meets and falls in love with a naive millworker, Julie Jordan. Desperate for money, a dark sequence of events leads to Billy's death. The plot comes full circle as Billy is given a chance to return to earth for one day —15 years after his death — in an attempt to instill hope in his beloved Julie and the daughter he never knew.
"If I Loved You," "June Is Bustin' Out All Over" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" are among the popular songs that emerged from the musical, which was made into a film starring Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRea.
Director Himmelheber is a Cal State Fullerton graduate who holds an M.F.A. in theatre arts-acting and has performed professionally across the nation at such venues as the Kennedy Center, Greek Theatre and Hollywood Bowl. In her student days, she was twice a national finalist for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship.
