Cal State Fullerton's Center for Insurance Studies and the Los Angeles Risk Insurance Management Society are sponsoring an Oct. 17 Global Climate & Catastrophic Risk Forum.

Wednesday, Oct. 17
8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Beverly Garland Hotel
4222 Vineland Ave., North Hollywood, 91602

Among the speakers:

Lucy Jones, seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and visiting research associate at the Seismological Laboratory at Caltech, will give the keynote address.

Robert Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute, will discuss "Catastrophic Risk and Insurability: Can the Insurance Industry Cope?"

Stephen P. D'Arcy, holder of the CSUF Robitaille Chair of Risk and Insurance, will speak on "Integrating Risk, Optimizing Strategies: ERM as an Answer to Earthquake Risk Management."

"I believe this event will prove beneficial to the insurance industry as a whole, to educate and prepare our industry for a reality that comes with living and working in earthquake country," said Weili Lu, director of the Center for Insurance Studies. "Our agenda reflects this theme of preparation — from the keynote presentation about the risks of living in a seismically active area, to our panel discussions on the specific challenges for insurers and risk managers. In addition, the program allows students from our university to interact with working professionals, as well as learn about the major issues affecting the industry."

Panel Discussions:

  • "Lessons Learned From Earthquakes: Modeling, Regulation and Risk Management"
  • "Earthquake Challenges: Insurer and Reinsurer Response"
  • "The Pre-Earthquake Challenge of Acquiring Adequate Commercial Earthquake Insurance: A Brokerage Perspective"

The program will conclude with "The Post-Earthquake Challenge: Putting Plans Into Action From the Claims Perspective," presented by Jeff Casillas, vice president of claims, FM Global.
