Scholarship Honors Late Nursing Student

Nov. 20, 2012

As a tribute to their daughter who died in 2011 before completing her nursing degree, Tomas and Sylvia Hernandez established the Stephanie Hernandez Memorial Scholarship. Cal State Fullerton undergrad Denisse Rodriguez has been named the first scholarship recipient.

“When she was in the fourth grade, I used to ask, ‘Mija (Spanish for ‘my daughter’), what do you want to be when you grow up?’ And, she said, ‘a nurse.’ She knew her purpose, and she never changed her mind,” Sylvia Hernandez said. “We wanted to give this scholarship because we want to help other nursing students.”

With a full course load, clinical internships and a job, the $500 scholarship alleviates some stress, said Rodriguez of Placentia. “As a student who has to work to pay for school, I'm very grateful for this scholarship. Stephanie was a very special person.”
