Two Dozen Grad Students Awarded Scholarships

Sept. 14, 2012

For alumna Kristina Brown-Arellano, a sociology graduate student, president of the campus sociology honor society — Alpha Kappa Delta — and mother of four young children, balancing a busy schedule and a part-time job is doable, but easier with financial aid.

Brown-Arellano, who completed her Cal State Fullerton bachelor's degree in sociology cum laude in May, is one of 24 CSUF graduate students who, this academic year, are being awarded a total of $48,000 in scholarships, thanks to the Graduate Equity Program, funded by the California State University Chancellor's Office. Each of the grad students is receiving $2,000.

“I feel blessed to be a recipient of this fellowship,” Brown-Arellano said. “It is helping to alleviate some financial stress, and as a mother of four, it's allowing me to focus more on my graduate coursework and family.”

The Graduate Equity Program seeks to increase the diversity of students completing graduate degree programs in the CSU by encouraging “continuation toward doctoral programs” and promoting “consideration of university faculty careers,” said Katherine Powers, director of graduate studies. “It provides fellowships for economically disadvantaged CSU students who have had success in overcoming educational disadvantages.”

Powers said applications for the program are due each spring. To be eligible, applicants must be graduate students enrolled in at least six units worth of classes each semester, have a financial need and demonstrate an educational disadvantage.
