Bringing the Bell Back
Aug. 17, 2012
A piece of a missing mission bell more than two centuries old has been returned, thanks to history sleuth Kathleen R. Frazee.
A staff member in the Center for Oral and Public History, Frazee delivered the piece July 19 to Cecilio T. Moraga, parish priest of Santa Ysabel, an asistencia (or sub-mission) of Mission San Diego de Alcalá.
“It was a very exciting moment,” Frazee said. “Father Cecilio was so happy to see it. He said there’s a family in the parish who is still blamed for the loss of the bells; now they can be vindicated. ... It was just very nice to help the mission settle the question of what happened so long ago.”
