Air Dryers Pilot Project Launches
Sept. 20, 2013
Facilities Operations has begun a pilot installation of high-efficiency hand dryers in the first-floor restrooms of Pollak Library. As part of the initiative, paper-towel dispensers near the dryers will be removed or decommissioned, but paper towels still will be available.
"This is part of our efforts to not only save money, but be environmentally responsible," said Leaa Short, coordinator of sustainable waste management services in facilities operations. "Our recent waste composition study determined that paper towels accounted for nearly 20 percent of the waste, by weight, generated at sampled locations. "Hand dryers can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, paper usage and the amount of material we send to landfills."
If the pilot proves successful, facilities operations will replace towel dispensers with air dryers throughout the university's 267 restrooms.
