ROTC cadets Yu-Feng “Jeff” Chao and Sara Ruiz will be commissioned as second lieutenants Dec. 13 at Cal State Fullerton. The ceremony is open to the public.

Friday, Dec. 13
10 a.m.

Cal State Fullerton, Titan Student Union, Titan Theater
800 N. State College Blvd., Fullerton, 92831

Chao, 22, of Diamond Bar, is completing his bachelor's degree in business administration-finance, and Ruiz, 23, of Fullerton, is completing her bachelor's degree in health science at Cal State Fullerton. Both students said they joined the university's ROTC program to gain leadership skills.

"I moved to the U.S. from Taiwan when I was 13 to pursue a better education," Chao said. "I acquired my citizenship by joining the Army in 2010 and my ambition was to become an officer. I want to use my knowledge and degree as an officer to serve our great nation and I feel this is the best decision that I can make. The ROTC program prepared me for my officer duties, equipping me with critical thinking and decision-making skills. It also taught me to put others first before myself."

The ceremony's keynote address will be delivered by Brig. Gen. Kurt A. Hardin, commander of the 104th Training Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.
