Shirley E. Stephenson, associate director/archivist emeritus of the Oral History Program, died Sept. 12. She was 91 years old.

"Few of the 2,000 interviews done by the program do not bear her mark at some state or another," said Larry de Graaf, professor emeritus of history and a university founder, in 1985 when he announced that Stephenson was the recipient of with the James V. Mink Award by the Southwestern Oral History Association. Stevenson was one of the organization's founders and served several times as its president.
Stephenson was active both locally and nationally, offering training programs and presentations on the techniques and procedures for conducting oral histories. She also authored articles in several books and magazines, and was co-editor of the "Centennial Bibliography of Orange County, California" published by the Orange County Historical Society in 1989.
She is survived by her sons, Gordon, Mike and Tom. A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at Westminster Memorial Park.
