Predicting Quakes? Nope

Cal State Fullerton professor David Bowman’s second installment of a “Living Textbook” on earthquakes. The ability to accurately predict the time, location and size of an earthquake has long been the "Holy Grail" of seismology. Like the Holy Grail of legend, this goal has been both elusive and illusory. To understand the earthquake process, many geologists take samples of rocks to the laboratory and subject them to the enormous pressures found deep in the earth, where earthquakes actually start.
