Fred Katz Dies At 94

Musician, Composer Brought Cello to Jazz

Pianist and cellist Fred Katz, who studied under Pablo Casals, was a high school dropout who scored Roger Corman films, backed Lena Horne and Tony Bennett, and taught college anthropology at Cal State Fullerton. Katz, who was 94, died Sept. 7 in Santa Monica. He joined the Cal State Fullerton faculty in 1968 and served 14 years before being awarded emeritus status. His passing was reported in the Los Angeles Times
