Academic Leadership Institute Launches Next Week

Department chairs, senior faculty members, staff and administrators selected from throughout the campus will be taking part in the first Academic Leadership Institute, an intensive weeklong professional development program sponsored by the President's Office and the Division of Academic Affairs. This program will be held June 3-7.

"Because higher education institutions present unique challenges, the idea is that faculty and staff can learn from best practices in other industries," said Jennifer Faust, associate vice president for academic affairs. "The program is aimed at preparing current and future university leaders to meet these challenges, by providing the skills proven effective in motivating others, planning for the future, navigating difficult circumstances and ensuring one’s own wellness."
 
Topics will include:

  • Self-assessment/self-awareness (management style, communication styles, etc.)
  • Effective leadership styles for academia
  • Communication strategies
  • The art of persuasion
  • Conflict management
  • Power and politics
  • Mentoring (developing successful junior faculty)
  • Earning trust and respect
  • Stress and time management
  • Strategic planning in a time of crisis
  • Vision and values in higher education
