Historian, award-winning author and scholar Craig L. Symonds will deliver “Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War Navy” April 25 at Cal State Fullerton. The free, public talk is the fourth annual Rietveld Lecture, which honors Lincoln scholar Ronald D. Rietveld, Cal State Fullerton emeritus professor of history.

Symonds is a prolific author and editor of 25 books, including “Lincoln and His Admirals: Abraham Lincoln, the U.S. Navy, and the Civil War,” prize-winning biographies of Joseph E. Johnston, Patrick Cleburne and Franklin Buchanan, “The American Heritage History of the Battle of Gettysburg” and “Decision at Sea: Five Naval Battles that Shaped American History." He also has taught at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, R.I., and at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, England.

Lecture Background:

The annual Rietveld Lecture by a prominent Lincoln scholar was established in 2009 to honor Rietveld for his service as a CSUF history professor for more than 40 years.
