Students Tracking Dolphins Through Coastal Waters
A Systematic Investigation of Dolphins in Newport Harbor and the Surrounding Region
June 4, 2013
Psychology lecturer Kayla Causey this month will be taking four Cal State Fullerton students out on the ocean, monitoring and collecting data on bottlenose dolphins as they cruise Orange County’s harbors and beaches. Causey and her students will depart Newport Harbor the mornings of June 14, 21, 24 and 28 on a 14-foot Achilles inflatable craft and spend about eight hours each day cruising the county’s coastline, tracking dolphin activity and behavior. Causey said that she and her students will examine how different behaviors, such as spending time and feeding in the harbors, affect the dolphins’ reproduction and survival. The research is part of Causey’s Coastal Dolphins of Orange County Project.
