Sheryl I. Fontaine, associate dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, has been named interim dean of the college, effective Aug. 1.

José L. Cruz, provost and vice president for academic affairs, today announced her appointment, noting that Fontaine "has a distinguished record as teacher, scholar and administrator.”

Fontaine will be responsible for ensuring that the college meets all its strategic and operational responsibilities while a national search for a permanent dean is conducted during the fall semester.

“As a teacher of writing, one of my goals is to help my students to know what they almost said, to hear the ideas that are on the tips of their tongues, and the edges of their minds and then to use their own writing to say it,” Fontaine said. "In a similar way, I look forward to celebrating the excellence of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences by listening to our faculty, staff and students, and doing what I can to help them shape the ideas that are on the edges of their minds and accomplish the academic and professional goals that seem to be just out of their reach."

The professor of English, comparative literature and linguistics received Cal State Fullerton’s 2011-12 Collegial Governance Award. She will fill the position currently held by Angela Della Volpe, who has served as dean for the past three years and will return to the classroom in the fall.
Fontaine, who has a Ph.D. in English and American literature from UC San Diego, joined the faculty in 1990. She had held a number of leadership roles, including chair of the English, Comparative Literature and Linguistics Department and director of the University Learning Center. In addition, she has served on several university committees.

Her published work includes authoring, co-authoring or editing multiple books, book chapters and articles on topics related to teaching writing, writing program administration and professional development.
