Set to complete his bachelor's degree in philosophy and political science in August, Jose Torres has been awarded a Pi Sigma Alpha Washington, D.C., intern scholarship.

Pi Sigma Alpha is the Political Science National Honor Society, and Torres is a member of the Cal State Fullerton chapter. As part of his award, the Cal State DC Scholar is interning this summer for the League of United Latin American Citizens. Torres, also a Class of 2013 Ronald E. McNair Scholar, recently was named the CSUF Educational Opportunity Program’s Graduate of the Year.

Before summer began, he worked on campus as a lead mentor in the University’s Links Mentoring Program. The Moreno Valley resident, who plans to pursue a career as a Congressional staff member in D.C., also has been awarded a fellowship appointment through the California Senate Fellows program.

As a fellow, he will spend a year, beginning in the fall, working in the state Capitol as a legislative staff member.

Torres credits CSUF, the Cal State DC and McNair Scholars programs for his success.

“Being here, working in Washington, D.C., has afforded me opportunities I never would have thought possible had it not been for these programs,” he said. “I’m gaining great opportunities to network with individuals in places where I want to work. I’m already meeting Congressional staff members, vice presidents of big companies, members of Congress, corporate executives and lobbyists, and I've only been here a short while.”
