Gertrude M. Reith

Gertrude M. Reith, emeritus professor of geography, died Feb. 20 at the age of 96. Reith, of Montecito, joined the faculty in 1961 and retired in 1983. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Washington and her Ph.D. in geography from Clark University. Reith helped develop Cal State Fullerton’s initial geography curriculum. She specialized in the geographies of California and the United States, with an emphasis in water resources. She also held the distinction of being the first woman to be elected chair of the California Geographical Society, which occurred in 1966. She also held officer positions in the National Council for Geographic Education. In addition, she served as chair of CSUF’s Geography Department. After retirement, she was active in the campus Emeriti for many years, serving as president from 1986 to 1988, and she is credited for being instrumental in the establishment of the Emeriti Memorial Scholarship Fund.
