Summer means fewer students on campus and more time for repairs and maintenance.
"Throughout the academic year most facilities are in constant use and it is really difficult to complete anything substantial that requires systems and structures to be taken offline," explained Willem van der Pol, director of facilities operation. "We usually try to pack the summer with projects requiring major shutdowns, road blockages and utility interruptions."
Current construction and/or landscaping projects include: a Starbucks cafe in the Pollak Library; a visitor information center at the Yorba Linda/Associated Road entrance; landscaping around the south entrance and outside Langsdorf Hall, as well as several small grassy areas around Mihaylo Hall.
"We're installing more drought-resistant, more sustainable and lower-maintenance plants to these areas to bring color and interest to the landscaping," said Jim Corbett, associate director of facilities operations. "By replacing the small grass areas that have to be hand mowed, we can create interest and eliminate a labor intensive project. We currently have only two grounds men to handle all of the campus green spaces between Nutwood Avenue and Gymnasium Drive."
Projects underway for the Athletics Department, include: revamping of the tennis courts; new floor art in the Titan basketball court; new locker rooms for cross country and track and field in Titan Stadium; new weight and locker rooms in the Kinesiology and Health Science Building
Elsewhere on campus, projects include: Clean up and trees around the Educational Classroom, Engineering and Visual Arts buildings ; refurbishment Student Health and Counseling Center; lighting retrofit in the upper gym and along East Campus Drive, where sidewalks are also being installed ; repainting in the Clayes Performing Arts Center ; repair/resurfacing West Campus Drive and East Campus Drive; east entrance to Parking Lot G; new office for the Military Science/ROTC Program just north of Titan House
