Sean Walker, associate professor of biological science, is the newly elected chair of Cal State Fullerton's Academic Senate for 2013-14.

A member of the faculty since 2003 and a senator since 2010, Walker was senate secretary during the 2012-13 academic year.

The Academic Senate develops, formulates and reviews educational and professional policy that becomes university policy if approved by the CSUF president. Besides faculty members, its membership includes administrators, two representatives from Associated Students Inc. and two staff members.

"I think the governor's push for expansion of online class offerings as a means of reducing costs will be among the items discussed by the Academic Senate this coming year," said Walker. "We, as an organization, will be helping the president [Mildred García] in the implementation of the strategic plan. This fall begins her second year on campus, and there are really high aspirations for the University's future.

"I'm looking forward to this opportunity to serve," he continued, adding that he believes it will be a good opportunity to learn more about the campus and its faculty, staff and students.

The educator recently was honored with the University's Carol Barnes Excellence in Teaching Award. Established in 2006, the award is named for a professor emeritus of elementary and bilingual education and recognizes faculty members who demonstrate academic rigor in teaching consistent with the University's mission and that of the California State University. The honor was presented May 16 before Walker's peers and associates at an Academic Senate meeting.

Walker, a resident of Fullerton, earned a doctorate in zoology from Miami University.

He is joined on this year's Academic Senate Executive Committee by:
