Education Alums Earn Teaching Honors

Alumnus Oscar Delgado '07, '12 (B.A. liberal studies, M.S. special education) is an honorable mention recipient of the 2013 Michael McKibbin Outstanding Educator Award from the California Teachers Corps. The Santa Ana resident, who completed the education specialist credential and the "On-Track: Transition to Teaching" programs, is a special education Spanish teacher at Santa Ana High School. He is also a mentor to teacher candidates in CSUF's AIMS program. "Oscar is a creative, innovative teacher who goes the extra mile for his students. We're proud of him for attaining this California award," said Belinda Dunnick Karge, professor of special education and Delgado's faculty mentor.
Helene Cunningham, who completed the College of Education's administrative credential program and "loved her classes here," has been honored as a 2013 National Distinguished Principal for California. The principal of Mariposa Elementary School in Brea, she received the recognition from the National Association of Elementary Principals. For 16 years, Cal State Fullerton and the college have partnered with Mariposa Elementary, resulting in a collaboration that has positively impacted student proficiency, professional growth and student teacher training, said Karge, who has been working with Cunningham and the school over the years.
