Students Test Their Skills in Sales

Competition One of Many Programs to Promote Career

Students interested in careers in the sales field will be going toe-to-toe in a Friday, Dec. 5, competition in which the top prizes are scholarships.

Nine four-member teams will receive sales training on products from two companies: Haas Automation and Verizon Wireless, explained Mark Mantey, director of the Sales Leadership Center, which is putting on the contest.

"Each team conducts two 12-minute presentations that are judged by the center's corporate partners. Presentations will be evaluated on the introduction, rapport that is built, presentation skills, addressing objectives and asking for the order.

"Competitors benefit by developing and practicing their sales skills," said Mantey. "They also have the opportunity to network with recruiters and sales managers."

The Mihaylo College of Business and Economics-based center, created in 2008, is dedicated to promoting leadership and professionalism in the field of sales.

"We work with students to prepare them for success, offering a wide range of programs focused on getting that sales position, including a sales training program that results in a Certificate in Professional Sales," said Mantey.

"We are changing the perception of what sales is all about and creating awareness of the opportunities in the field."
