CSUF team trading options in thinkorswim contest

Cal State Fullerton’s trading team is leading 245 other college teams in TD Ameritrade’s thinkorswim Challenge, a monthlong virtual trading competition set to end Friday.
The Tons of Fund team, made up of Christopher Harraka of Yorba Linda, Curtis Morrow of Irvine and Brandyn Young of West Covina, received $500,000 in virtual money and increased it 140 percent, earning $698,413 for a total of about $1.2 million, as of Oct. 31.
The team won the first week of competition, which coincided with a big drop in a volatile stock market that worked to its advantage. The strategy? Trading in options, which is “a contract that gives the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell an underlying asset at a specific price on or before a certain date,” according to Investopedia.com.
