Costner’s Latest Film Debuts

Jan. 13, 2014

Oscar- and Emmy-winner Kevin Costner’s new film, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” opens Friday.

Costner '78 (B.A. business administration-marketing), portrays Ryan’s CIA boss Thomas Harper. The New York Daily News characterized the mentor-student relationship between Chris Pine, who plays Ryan, and Costner as “particularly authentic on-screen.”

Trailers for the movie, which involves a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy, started airing during the holidays.

Costner won his Oscar in 1991 for directing “Dances With Wolves,” which snagged the Academy Award for best picture that year. According to IMDb, Costner was the first actor offered the role of Jack Ryan in “The Hunt for Red October,” the character’s first film appearance. Costner declined the role to make “Dances With Wolves.”
