New Dean for Humanities and Social Sciences
May 20, 2014
A 23-year veteran faculty member and administrator has been named to lead Cal State Fullerton's College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Sheryl Fontaine of Claremont, who had been serving as interim dean of the college since August, today (May 20) was named dean, in an announcement to the campus community by José L. Cruz, provost and vice president for academic affairs. Her appointment is effective June 1.
"Dr. Fontaine's depth and breadth of experience as a teacher-scholar and administrator and her respect for Cal State Fullerton's collegial culture will serve the college and the University well for years to come," said Cruz of the appointment.
The professor of English, comparative literature and linguistics joined the campus in 1990 after serving on the faculties of SUNY Stony Brook and Claremont McKenna College.
In addition to serving as interim dean, Fontaine has been the college's associate dean; chair of the English, Comparative Literature and Linguistics Department; and director of the University Learning Center.
She has served on numerous campuswide committees, including the President's Ad Hoc Strategic Planning Steering Committee in 2011, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Steering Committee from 2006 to 2012, and the WASC College Wide Planning Task Force from 2007 to 2012. For four years, she was a member of the University's Planning, Resources and Budget Committee, including serving as its chair.
Fontaine currently serves on the University's Academic Senate and, last week, was re-elected to the senate's 2014-15 executive board as one of three at-large members.
The range of her campus service was recognized with the University's 2011-12 Faculty Leadership in Collegial Governance Award, an annual honor presented to faculty members for exemplary leadership and lasting contributions to shared governance and to the mission of the California State University.
Her published work includes authoring, co-authoring or editing multiple books, book chapters and articles on topics related to teaching writing, writing program administration and professional development.
Anil Puri, dean of Mihaylo College of Business and Economics, chaired the 10-member search committee who recommended Fontaine's appointment.
