Classical Guitarists Featured at International Convention

Concerts, Master Classes and More Highlight Guitar Foundation of America Event June 20-25

Cal State Fullerton is hosting the Guitar Foundation of America's International Convention and Competition June 20–25, featuring more than 600 classical guitar performers and scholars, promising young players and enthusiasts. The event offers concerts, lectures, hands-on workshops, master classes, music showcases, a Hall of Fame awards ceremony and an international concert artist competition. The convention is open to the public and registration is required.

Concert Highlights:

The artist lineup includes some of the biggest names in the world of classical guitar.

8 p.m., unless otherwise noted, in the Clayes Performing Art Center's Meng Concert Hall. Concert tickets are $15-$35 and can be purchased online.

International Concert Artist Competition:

6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, Meng Concert Hall
Tickets are $20-$35 and can be purchased online.

The winner of the GFA International Concert Artist Competition receives a cash prize, an extensive international tour, and recording and publishing contracts. The prize is the most sought after in the world of classical guitar, said Martha Masters, CSUF classical guitar faculty member and president of GFA. Masters and Vladimir Gorbach, who also teaches classical guitar at CSUF, are past first-prize winners of the international competition. Masters, who won in 2000 and Gorbach in 2011, are co-hosts of the convention.


CSUF student guitarists will give the opening performance June 24 before Jorge Caballero's concert that evening. Caballero wrote a new work for the student ensemble to perform, and Masters will be conducting the piece. GFA commissioned the new work in honor of guitarist Jorge Morel, who is among musicians being inducted into the 2014 GFA Hall of Fame at 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 25.


Convention registration is $90-$350 and registration is available online. Advance registration is not required for single-day tickets, and all tickets will be available on site during the convention in the Clayes Performing Arts Center, Room 127


$2 per hour or $8 for a daily permit Monday though Friday; free on weekends. Details available online.
