Local whiz kids taking part in Cal State Fullerton's Math Circle, organized and conducted by Bogdan Suceavă, professor of mathematics, have their faculty mentors cheering.

Six members of the Math Circle qualified to sit for the March 13 American Invitational Math Examination (AIME), the second phase of the North American math Olympiads. Math Circle students also are taking the Math Kangaroo exam Thursday, March 20, in which students in grades 1-12 will put their math knowledge to the test.

The AIME competitors are: 12th-grader Bryan Brzycki; his younger brother, Brendan Brzycki, and Mike Bao, both ninth-graders; and Ryan Han, 11th grade, all from Troy High School in Fullerton; also Matthew Kim, an eighth-grader at Brea Junior High School; and seventh-grader Alvin Kim from Calle Mayor Middle School in Torrance.

Alvin Kim tested in the American Mathematical Competition (AMC) 8 last fall with a perfect score, then took the AMC 10, usually taken by 10th-graders. In the words of Suceavă, "Alvin just skyrocketed the scores" in the AMC 10, a qualifying exam preceding AIME.

"I've never seen any student in the seventh grade qualify for AIME," said Suceavă. "This is just stellar. Alvin is in the top 1 percent for students in grades 10 and below who competed in AMC 10 in February."

Suceavă added that all of these young math students are "like gold — above the curve. We have students of the best caliber in the Fullerton Math Circle who deserve high praises for their work."

The Fullerton Math Circle has more than 90 elementary, middle school and high school students attending the Saturday morning sessions. CSUF math students and faculty members lead the sessions to foster the next generation of mathematicians.
