OCC's Last Founding Faculty Member, Giles Brown, Dies

He was just 32 when he began teaching history at Orange Coast College. That was 65 years ago, when the college was born. Giles Brown, the last surviving founding faculty member of OCC, passed away in his Newport Beach home on Saturday at the age of 97, the college announced this week.
In an interview prior to his death, Brown said he was tempted to go on to other universities to teach but stayed at OCC until 1960 when he accepted an offer from Cal State Fullerton. He taught there and eventually became the university’s dean of graduate studies and associate vice president of academic programs.
