Rohulla Latif: Nothing Keeps You From Your Dreams

Last April, I was elected president and chief executive of Associated Students Inc. by the student body of Cal State Fullerton. I was elected to lead an organization representing more than 38,000 students with a multimillion-dollar operating budget.
t was a very surreal time for me, as I celebrated winning the election and reflected on the road that my family and I had traveled to lead me to this point.
You see, I was born in Afghanistan and grew up with my mother and three sisters. My mother was a teacher in Afghanistan, but everything changed after the Soviet Union's invasion, followed by the rise of the Taliban. The decade-long war changed everything; it was hard to live our daily lives and became even harder to survive.
I witnessed the great strength my mother showed in constantly striving to create a better life for me and my sisters despite the conditions. It was during this time that she decided to move us to the United States about 13 years ago. She felt the U.S. was the best place for her and all of us to actually have a life that we could call our own.
