Exploring the Link Between Health and Racism

After the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Sawssan R. Ahmed was determined to do something about the backlash the Arab American community was facing.
Ahmed decided to expand on her knowledge and past studies of psychology to include how certain factors affect the Arab American community. She began researching if there was a connection between racism and health.
“Exposure to racism is related to higher blood pressure,” said Ahmed, an assistant professor of psychology at Cal State Fullerton. “There has been a lot of focus on this.”
When she’s not in the classroom teaching, Ahmed works on projects that aim to discover the connections between racism, behavior and psychology.
