L. Donald Shields, Cal State Fullerton's president from 1970 to 1980, was honored Saturday, July 19, as the 2014 recipient of the Golden Oak Award during the 17th annual Midsummer Night in the Garden gala at the Fullerton Arboretum. The award recognizes Shields' personal efforts to establish the Fullerton Arboretum, as well as the University's growth and connections to the city of Fullerton that occurred during his presidency.

The festive event on the Orchard Lawn drew 280 campus and community members for an evening of dining and dancing under the stars. Proceeds benefit the preserve and its programs.
