CSUF Nursing Alum Gives Back to Her Vietnamese Community

Rosa Pham, 25, was excited to visit Vietnam, the country her parents left behind decades ago. But not to explore her cultural heritage

Instead, the Cal State Fullerton grad and Santa Ana resident went last year to share her nursing skills with the people of Saigon (renamed Ho Chi Minh City after the war), paying for the cost of the trip with the Fountain Valley-based Project Vietnam Foundation.

As part of Project Vietnam Foundation’s medical mission surgical team, Pham assisted doctors in performing cleft-lip palate surgeries for children in the city and those flown in by Project Vietnam Foundation for care. By the time the week was over, over 60 patients had their cleft lip palates repaired, preventing a lifetime of hearing and speech problems.

“(My mother) was proud that I had chosen to go back to Vietnam, and it wasn’t something that anyone had pushed me to go. It was a decision that I actually wanted to do,” said Pham.
