Fred Tomaselli ’81 (B.A. art) is coming back to his alma mater for a Sept. 12-Dec. 12 exhibition of his early installations, video and mixed media works in the Begovich Gallery.
“Fred Tomaselli: The Early Works or How I Became a Painter” features a video,“Bogus Science,” seven installations and 12 mixed-media works dating from 1984 to 1992 — works created before he moved on to the paintings and surreal compositions for which he is best known. The early works were influenced by his punk rock roots and interest in the California Light and Space art.
“It is such a great opportunity for our students to be able to see the work Tomaselli created in the 1980s, just after he graduated. One of the works in the exhibition is a drawing he created as a student at Cal State Fullerton,” says Begovich director Mike McGee, who curated the exhibition. “This exhibition was planned in concert with an exhibition of his most recent work that was presented earlier this year at the Orange County Museum of Art.”
An opening reception takes place 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12.
The exhibition is accompanied by a book published by the California State University, Fullerton, Grand Central Press, with a foreword and essay by McGee, as well as essays by art critic Gregory Volk and Bill Arning, director of the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston.
Begovich Gallery is located in the Visual Arts Center and is open noon-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and noon – 2 p.m. Saturdays.
