Documentary Screening Oct. 12

Mesa Cooperativa hosts a noon Monday, Oct. 12, screening of Alfred Lugo’s documentary “The Men of Company E,” which focuses on the struggles of Chicano soldiers in World War II.

The three-hour event in Titan Theater includes a book signing with Samuel S. Ortega and Arnulfo Hernandez Jr., who penned “The Men of Company E: Toughest Chicano Soldiers of World War II.”

The book, published in July, tells the stories of the Texas-based Company E of the 141st U.S. Army Infantry Division, 2nd Battalion, 36th Division. It was the only U.S. Army company composed entirely of Chicanos during the war, and its soldiers helped liberate Italy and France from the Nazis in 1944. The soldiers returned determined to lead their children in a quest for education and something other than the status quo of second-class citizenship for Mexican Americans.
