Class Explores African American Masculinity

When popular rap artist The Game includes lyrics about carrying a gun do you believe he actually lives a violent lifestyle? What if it were Justin Bieber instead? Is the association with violence the same, or more or less believable?

As part of a recent “Black Men in America” class at Cal State Fullerton, assistant professor of African American studies Natalie Graham and her students pondered this question as they viewed and analyzed the music video “100” by The Game featuring Drake.

Graham also asked students to question whether rappers in the United States are more susceptible to being viewed as a tough, unemotional and violent if they are African American. Continue reading.
