Researcher Studies Oldest-Known Marine Turtle Fossils

When it comes to ancient sea turtle fossils, what’s most challenging — and fascinating — to Cal State Fullerton assistant professor of geological sciences James Parham is that they share many characteristics with modern-day sea turtles.
Because of their similarities, it ironically is at times difficult to identify how they are related, Parham said.
He and Colombian paleontologist Edwin Cadena recently published their discovery of the oldest-known marine turtle fossils on record. The fossilized turtles, found to be more than 120 million years old, were located in Colombia in 2007 and later identified as the oldest on record. Continue reading.
