Nursing Students Learn to Understand Life Under the Poverty Line

Pablo Perez, a 21-year-old college student, hasn’t attended school for a month.

Perez has no contact with his mother and his father was incarcerated last month, leaving him as the sole support for his 13-year-old twin sisters and 3-year-old brother.

Actually, Perez is Andy Ngo, 26, a nurse and Community Health Nursing student and not a poor 20-something suddenly tasked with holding his family together - but he could be.

Ngo was participating in Cal State Fullerton’s first Poverty Simulation, hosted Sept. 12 by the School of Nursing for roughly 70 Community Health Nursing students. The simulation exposed students to the difficulties of living day-to-day beneath the poverty line in hopes that they will have a better understanding of the hardships facing some of their patients.
