The Rietveld Lecture series, sponsored by Cal State Fullerton's College of Humanities and Social Sciences, was launched as a tribute to the historian in 2009, the year the educator retired from Cal State Fullerton. Rietveld is considered a leading authority on Lincoln, a subject that he has been focused on since the age of 14, when he found a photo of the president lying in state. The photo had been lost for 87 years.
Since its creation, the Rietveld Lecture has featured such noted scholars as Ronald C. White, author of "A. Lincoln: A Biography," and Craig L. Symonds, author of "Lincoln and His Admirals: Abraham Lincoln, the U.S. Navy and the Civil War."
