It’s On Us — to Stop Sexual Assault

Last fall, when President Obama launched the nationwide “It’s on Us” campaign to end sexual assault on university and college campuses, the students at Cal State Fullerton took notice.

“The idea is that it’s on all of us to take notice and take care of each other,” said Tonantzin Oseguera, dean of students.

As a result of the national campaign, a video was recently produced by Associated Students. To get it into the hands of every student at Cal State Fullerton, a link to the video was sent out to each enrolled student Monday, April 27.

In addition, the video will be shown at various venues throughout the remainder of the semester and to incoming students during this summer’s new student orientation programs.

Human services major Tom Garland, who serves as a student representative on the University’s Title IV Committee, assisted on the “It’s On Us” campaign.

“I was honored to be asked to help,” he said. “I think many young people think they’re indestructible and that nothing bad will ever happen to them. President Obama said during the kickoff to this national campaign that it is estimated that one in five women and one in 16 men will be sexually assaulted during their college years.

“That number is frightening,” he continued. “If these issues go unchecked, then violence can continue. It’s imperative to get the word out and to encourage students to look out for each other and to stand up for each other.

“Essentially, it is on us to change the culture of our communities, be aware of sexual violence and change society.”
