DEATH PENALTY RESEARCH RECOGNIZED

Russ Espinoza, CSUF associate professor of psychology, was recognized at the 24th annual Death Penalty Focus Awards Dinner for his research on racial bias in jury decisions on the death penalty.

Death Penalty Focus is a nonprofit organization led by actor and activist Mike Farrell. The organization is seeking to end capital punishment.

Espinoza and Cynthia Willis-Esqueda, an associate professor of psychology at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, worked to determine if European American and Latino mock jurors would demonstrate bias in deciding on the death penalty when evidence, defendant ethnicity and socioeconomic status were varied. The results of the study were published last year in the journal Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology.
