Graduates Make Their Way in 'Land of Opportunity'

"I cannot believe it!" Those were Silvia Suárez's words when her daughter Maríajose Flores graduated with a B.A. in liberal studies from Cal State Fullerton. She is now on her way to become a primary school teacher.

"I always encouraged her to continue studying," said the proud mother, a Santa Ana resident from the state of Mexico.

Suárez and her other daughters, Esmeralda and Carolina, were happily present during the lavish commencement ceremony on a bright Sunday. Along with Suárez and her family, more than 60,000 attended the May 16 and 17 ceremonies to celebrate the accomplishments of 10,715 graduates — 6,209 women and 4,506 men, and among these, 3,150 Hispanics.
