Gaining Cross-Cultural Understanding Via Sports

After five long years, I had finally earned a seat at the graduation ceremony. Having been the first in my family to attend and now graduate from a university, I couldn't help but feel overjoyed. I also couldn't help thinking that in less than 24 hours I would be on a flight to Brazil.
I majored in kinesiology at Cal State Fullerton. Essentially, kinesiology is the academic study that focuses on the human body and its movements from a biomechanical, physiological and even psychological approach. This trip would be part of the KNES 499: Independent Study class, in which a study plan is developed and a project is implemented, in cooperation with a faculty adviser.
I was among the 14 kinesiology students chosen to be part of this two-week experience in Brazil. During the spring, we have ongoing meetings throughout the semester to better familiarize us with the culture and teaching environment. Essentially, we were to design physical education classes for Ultimate Frisbee, football, baseball and softball, and then teach the fundamentals of that sport to an assigned physical education class.
