New Arts Dean Aims to Take COTA Higher
Dale Merrill Takes the Stage as Dean of the College of the Arts

Dale Merrill, boasting an extensive background in the arts, soon will take the Cal State Fullerton stage as the new dean of the College of the Arts.
Until this month, Merrill was the dean of the College of Performing Arts at Chapman University, where he saw the college through its earliest years, started the dance program and served as artistic director, producer and choreographer for “American Celebration,” Chapman’s biggest scholarship fundraiser.
Merrill is finishing his time at Chapman in a new role as dean of strategic planning, outreach and programming for the Musco Center for the Arts. He begins at CSUF on July 1.
Merrill succeeds interim Dean Jim Taulli, who stepped in after Joseph Arnold retired his position as dean in 2014 after 41 years with CSUF.
Once the artistic director for the Spectrum Dance Theater in Seattle, Merrill has 30 years of experience in choreography. Merrill’s path and passion for dance didn’t start with a resolute declaration, but with a “Sure, what the heck.” He was curious about dance but had always been more of a music and theater type of person through high school.
