Campus Organization holds Free Lecture Series

Cal State Fullerton’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, in conjunction with the Golden Hearts Group at St. Jude Medical Center, is offering a series of free, public lectures on various medical issues. The series – offered in three off-campus locations – will focus on “medical literacy” to promote an understanding of the medical conditions, as well as diagnosis and treatment options.

9-10:30 a.m., Wednesdays, co-sponsored and offered at the Fullerton Elks Club Lodge, 1451 N. Brea Blvd., Fullerton

  • Jan. 20 — “Controversies Regarding the Use of Statins in the Prevention of Heart Disease” with Daniel Landa, Orange County cardiologist       
  • Feb. 3 — “Genetic Factors (Family History) Affecting the Development and Treatment of Cancer” presented by Sam Klempner, professor of oncology at UCI School of Medicine      
  • Feb. 17 — “Evolution of the Hospital in the Delivery of Health Care” by Riad Abdelkarim, vice president of medical affairs at St. Jude Medical Center
  • March 2 — ” Recent Changes in Screening Tests for Cancer” with James Yoon, physician at St. Jude Medical Center
  • March 16 — “Microbiome — The Importance of Keeping Gut Flora Happy” by gastroenterologist Martin Carr
  • April 6 — “Inflammation and Its Effect on Our Health” with physician Norman Myers

  • Jan. 27 — “Foot and Ankle Problems in the Senior Population” presented by podiatric surgeon Marie Keplinger with St. Jude Medical Center
  • Feb. 10 — “Updates on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Hypertension” with internist Bradley Borsari of St. Jude Medical Center
  • Feb. 24 — “Recent Changes in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Lung Cancer” presented by Daniel Oh, clinical professor of thoracic surgery, USC’s Keck School of Medicine, and director of the lung cancer program at St. Jude Medical Center
  • March 9 — “Headache” with neurologist Kiran Bath of St. Jude Medical Center
  • March 23 — “What Happens in the Emergency Room” with physician Erwin Song of St. Jude Medical Center
  • April 13 — “Heartburn and Reflux” by gastroenterologist Sajen Mathews from St. Jude Heritage Medical Group and St. Jude Medical Center

  • March 10 — “Update on Breast Cancer” with Clarence Petrie, director of the cancer program and Breast Cancer Conference at St. Jude Medical Center
  • March 24 — “Changes in the Use of Aspirin and the New Anticoagulants” presented by Ian Gordon, clinical professor of vascular surgery at UCI School of Medicine
  • April 14 — “Back Pain — “The Latest Indications for Surgical and Non-Surgical Treatment” by Eric Lin, spine surgeon at St. Jude Medical Center
