Julian Jefferies, assistant professor of literacy and reading education, spoke to students from the University of Guadalajara’s Center of Social Sciences and Humanities about the need to create awareness about the plight of the undocumented.
Jefferies touched upon his research on the challenges that undocumented individuals face as they try to get a university education. A group of current and former undocumented students from the United States shared their experiences.
Anti-immigration policies such as deportation or police persecution have a marked effect on the daily lives of young undocumented workers and affect their decision to pursue an education, thus denying them the opportunity to become professionals, said Jefferies.
