ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Hollywood hasn't caught up with college life of today

Cal State Fullerton President Mildred García discusses in a column for the Orange County Register the great diversity and makeup of the University’s students and campus:

Historically, when a movie or television show depicts “college life,” the same clichéd images splash across our screens: carefree students playing Frisbee, the crazed student section at a homecoming game, a dorm room littered with pizza boxes.

The ubiquity of these pictures stems from the fact that, historically, they aligned with the experiences of the vast majority of college students. And while I’m not in the business of ensuring Hollywood’s depiction of university life is accurate, I am in the business of ensuring that the people of Orange County know what college life looks like today, particularly at the public institution placed here to serve them: California State University, Fullerton.
