Connecting Students, Faculty with Accounting Firms

With more than 1,500 students enrolled, Cal State Fullerton’s Department of Accounting has experienced a growth spurt and, as a result, has started a program that encourages partnerships between the department and Orange County accounting firms.

The Adopt a Firm program is the creation of Betty Chavis, chairwoman of the university’s Department of Accounting and professor of accounting.

Chavis has deemed the effort – which was recently instituted in the Mihaylo College of Business and Economics – as beneficial to her department since a trial of the program was introduced in 2014.

The Adopt a Firm program has three main goals:

• To provide an outstanding curriculum for accounting students

• To maintain close relationships with accounting firms in Orange County

• To help students gain employment after graduation

“The reason we set it up is because we have a huge accounting program,” Chavis said. “I was trying to think of a way to form a closer connection.”

In order to jump-start students’ job searches before they graduate from CSUF, Chavis decided more needed to be done to expose students to local accounting firms.
