Good Eats and Natural Treats at Fullerton Arboretum

Editor’s Note: The July 8 Concert in the Park Picnic event has been canceled.

From nature photography and bird watching, to musical performances and culinary arts, the Fullerton Arboretum offers a variety of summer programs for the community. All activities are held at 1900 Associated Road, Fullerton, 92831, with proceeds benefiting the botanical garden’s education programs.

Afternoon of Classical and Jazz Music — June 4, 4-7 p.m.

CSUF’s School of Music presents an afternoon of classical and jazz music at the arboretum’s Bacon Pavilion, benefiting student scholarships. Tickets are $20 and will be available at the event.

Backyard Barbecue Blowout — June 8, 6-9 p.m.

Jonathan Dye and Jonathan Duffy Davis share a backyard barbecue menu that features filet of beef sandwiches with horseradish cream, crisp summer slaw, grilled lemon chicken with orzo salad, and glazed barbecue spare ribs with fresh potato salad. Registration is $80 for members and $90 for non-members.

Star Spangled Brisket, Bacon Tasting — June 24, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Debbi Dubbs and Louise Mellor showcase a summer menu that includes BLT and C summer grilled corn salad with applewood smoked bacon, butter lettuce, heirloom tomatoes, fresh grilled sweet corn and smoked tomato vinaigrette; and beer-braised brisket with smoky Carolina barbecue sauce and cider slaw. Registration is $60 for members and $65 for non-members.

Nature Photography — June 25, 1-4 p.m.

Amateur to advanced photographers are invited to learn how to use space, light and time to take memorable photos. Nature photographer Steve Kaye will demonstrate techniques to advance photography and graphic design skills. Registration is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.

Wild Beers Workshop — June 25, 1-3:30 p.m.

Instructor Pascal Baudar will teach the basics of making beer with local plants, such as yarrow and mugwort, and common household utensils. Students will also learn how to extract wild yeast, creating sugar sources from fruits and berries and much more. Registration, which is limited to 25 people, is $45 for members and $50 for non-members.

Concert in the Park Picnic — July 8, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. This event has been canceled.

Debbi Dubbs and Louise Mellor present fresh picnic ideas such as nectarine skewers with fresh mozzarella bocconcini; grilled steak sandwiches with blue cheese butter; and butter bean and cherry tomato salad with roasted shallot and sherry vinaigrette. Registration is $60 for members and $65 for non-members.

Birds of Prey — July 11, 7-8 p.m.

Join representatives of the Orange County Bird of Prey Center on the Bacon Pavilion deck for an up-close look at hawks, eagles, owls and falcons, and learn why these birds are considered the kings of the sky. Registration is $5 for members and $10 for non-members.

Tailgating and Picnicking in Style — July 13, 6-9 p.m.

Jonathan Dye and Jonathan Duffy Davis share a crowd-pleasing menu that includes buttermilk biscuits with shaved parma ham, whipped butter and pepper jelly; caponata with crostini; and grilled andouille sausage with patatas bravas. Registration is $80 for members and $90 for non-members.

Old World vs. New World — July 20, 6-9 p.m.

Laurent Brazier, executive chef instructor for La Cuisine Culinary Arts, hosts a gourmet dinner that includes crab cake with lemon aioli and micro-greens; house smoked salmon with roasted garlic sauce; hoisin glazed duck breast with soba noodle; blue cheese filet mignon with haricot vert and demi glace sauce. Registration is $80 for members and $90 for non-members.
