Former Cal State Fullerton President Milton Gordon Dies at 81

President Milton Gordon, who led CSUF from 1990 to 2012 and was also the fourth African American president in the California State University system, died Tuesday after a lengthy illness. He was 81.

Gordon, who oversaw the maturation of the university into a more diverse learning environment with a more international reach, saw enrollment expand to more than 36,000 from 25,736 during his tenure.

When Gordon took over as president in 1990, nearly 60 percent of the student body was Caucasian. By the time he retired in 2012, that percent flipped, with students of color making up more than half of enrollment, mirroring the demographic shifts of the region, wrote CSUF President Mildred García in an email to the campus community Tuesday.
