Exploring Slaying of ‘Monsters’ in Humanizing Drag Queens

For a paper he presented recently at the fifth annual American Studies Student Association Symposium on campus, Michael Paramo analyzed historical descriptions of society’s responses to those who disrupt the gender binary — that is, who don’t fit traditional classifications of male and female.
From published studies, he deduced that fear is what drives people to “monsterize” such individuals.
The ongoing controversy over transgenders’ use of public restrooms is an example of how longstanding narratives of monstrosity have maintained dominance in society, according to Paramo’s research.
