Changing the Stereotypes of Immigrants and Their Professions

Armando M. Martínez-Cruz, professor of mathematics, was the first in his family to graduate and obtain a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). From there, he obtained his master’s degree and doctorate from Ohio State University, proving that immigrants are more than stereotypes and prejudice.
"Many are afraid of math, but if you have the commitment and mentors to help you, you have the opportunity to increase your career options," says Martinez-Cruz. "I am happy to be an example that immigrants provide more than cheap labor; we are also preparing for bigger things.”
